SUMMARY
The Lead Electrical Engineer is responsible for review of PV and ESS projects design by providing technical expertise in the interconnection, construction, and assisting in the commissioning of distributed energy resources (DERs). This role requires an electrical engineer with experience in electrical infrastructure up to 345kV, including in-depth knowledge and expertise protective relaying and controls, and a strong working knowledge in applicable national codes including NEC and NESC. The Lead Electrical Engineer will work closely with the Director of Electrical Engineering on department initiatives and process improvements.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- This position reports to the Director, Electrical Engineering and will work closely with Grid Integration Engineering and Design Engineering to design and commission commercial, industrial, and utility-scale PV+ESS designs.
- Specify and review equipment shop drawings for switchgear, transformers, reclosers and other major electrical equipment.
- Perform advanced electrical modeling in ETAP and AmpCalc to coordinate system protection, determine fault-duty ratings, calculate arc-flash hazards, and run step/touch grounding analysis.
- Manage scope of work for 3rd party electrical engineers including but not limited to studies; protection coordination, power flow, arc flash, Step/touch grounding analysis, PSCAD and PSSE modeling, and substation design.
- Support the Grid Integration and Design Engineering team:
- Review, analyze, and interpret utility pre-screen reports, System Impact Studies, Interconnection Service Agreements, and utility negotiations.
- Witness test procedure review, code interpretation, protective settings development.
- Implementation of non-wires alternatives, selective curtailment, and other grid-edge technologies.
- Train and mentor junior engineering personnel.
- Complete Project design reviews; review of single line diagrams, three-line diagrams, and site layout designs for compliance with code, best practices, and utility requirements.
- Respond to RFIs on active construction projects as required.
- Provide technical support to Nexamp commissioning:
- Review medium-voltage equipment tests and factory tests.
- Develop mitigation plans for non-performance to establish safe operation.
- Review RDB files and relay test reports.
- Certify mechanical completion on construction complete projects.
- Provide technical support to Nexamp development, EPC, and O&M departments for the entire life cycle of a project including development, permitting, construction, and asset management phases.
- Lead new product research and implementation, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and best practices.
- Assist the Director in the identification of process improvements and lead initiatives.
- Maintain a high level of professionalism and ethical conduct.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 9+ years of electrical engineering experience.
- 4+ years of PV experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering and PE certification.
- AutoCAD software proficiency.
- ETAP, SKM, or AmpCalc modeling experience.
- AcSELerator and RDB generation.
- PSSE, Aspen, or PSCAD modeling experience preferred.
- Utility scale design and HV substation experience or effective grounding expertise.
- Expertise industry standard design codes such as National Electric Code, International Building Code, International Fire Code and other industry standards.
- Expertise of electrical principles, including medium voltage distribution, protection system coordination and relaying principles.
- Strong knowledge of construction means and methods.
- Ability to work as part of a fast paced, multi-disciplinary team, demonstrated leadership capability of multi-disciplined teams.
- Valid Driver’s License or ability to obtain same.
