The Sr. R&D Engineer has responsibility for providing R&D services throughout Shutterfly including all subsidiaries; Spoonflower, Snapfish, Lifetouch, Shutterfly Business Solutions, etc. This position leads the Research and Development of multidisciplinary projects to enable new product requests and business needs, improve current manufacturing processes and insource products that currently are managed by external fulfillment partners.
What You Will Do Here:
Conduct analytical analysis and research of available solution and technologies worldwide. These solutions extend across digital printing, finishing, converting, packaging, materials, robotics, AL/ML, etc.
Although these research and development projects can be highly complicated and complex the Sr. R&D Engineer will need to articulate and present the research results in a simplified manner taking in consideration the target audience and the overall company goals. These presentations will not only discuss the research methodology and its results but will also cover financials, implementation risks and cross functional integration. In addition, these presentations will include a timeline, budget and a formal recommendation.
The target audience for these presentations would be a wide range of groups within the company at various levels with the goal of obtaining alignment and agreement on paths forward.
A successful Sr. R&D Engineer will be open to feedback, highly inquisitive and creative while always keeping an open mind for new ideas. The ideal candidate will be an impressive communicator, taking every advantage to gather more information and feedback while keeping the team focused on the project in hand, its timetable and its cost.
Sometimes, in order to recommend a solution, a physical test will need to be executed in order to increase confidence in the solution – these acceptance tests will also be lead by Sr. R&D Engineer and will include a detailed test plan written, including development of testing methodologies and getting alignment with all relevant teams.
The Sr. R&D Engineer also needs to be able to conduct financial analysis utilizing standard business practices through advanced calculation methodologies. These business models will be reviewed by the finance team but need to be as close to complete and accurate as possible before that review. These calculation methodologies could include sensitivity analysis, weighted average, goals seek, etc.
The Sr. R&D Engineer is responsible for providing well articulated, well researched and thorough recommendations to the organizations. Sometimes these recommendations will include a NOT DO recommendation, and thus the Sr. R&D Engineer will need to be able to let go of projects that will be deemed as “not moving forward” projects and continue on.
After a recommendation has been approved and converted into “execution project” the Sr. R&D Engineer will hand over the leadership of the project to the execution team lead by the Process Innovation team. The Sr. R&D Engineer will still be part of the project team but will convert to a support role.
The Sr. R&D Engineer will work cross-functionally with a wide and diverse group. (e.g. Finance, procurement, supply chain, manufacturing, Lab engineering, product managers, Brand general managers, Program management office (PMO), Lab Project managers, industrial engineers, process engineers, technical support, training, technical writers …)
The Skills You Will Bring:
Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. (Preferred: MBA or other equivalent business degree)
5+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience with project management, six sigma, lean manufacturing and change management.
Experience in product development and testing.

Travel: Must have the ability to travel to support: process implementation at other Shutterfly lab locations, trade shows, or vendor/partner locations as needed. Travel can be domestic or international.
