Job introduction
Technology Operations
Technology Operations is part of Technology & Product Group. The department actively helps BBC programme makers create and deliver great content across radio, TV and online. Technology Operations is principally responsible for the broadcast support of live and recorded programme output all day, every day across News Group, Radio at various sites in London including Broadcasting House, Millbank and Maida Vale and BBC North in Salford. As a support department our role is to make life as easy as possible for those using the BBC’s technology, while minimising the amount of Licence Fee we consume in doing so.
Technology Operations provides support for; TV and radio studios broadcast infrastructure, digital production systems, other core broadcast facilities and PC and Mac desktops across domestic and international offices.
Mechanical workshop
The Technology Operations Mechanical workshop provide a range of services that support engineering and production workflow. These range from bespoke design and machine-shop fabrication skills to specialist system and manufacturing skills, including cable termination and installation. The team also support robotic camera system configuration and work with third party suppliers to design and implement safety rigs within our studios, utilising a range of materials to enable safe working and practical solutions. Their work covers all aspects of manufacturing materials to create solutions for projects or dedicated solutions to unusual problems.

Main responsibilities
As an Operations Technician within the Technology Operations Technicians workshop, you will be part of a team that provides technical and physical solutions to studio and broadcast projects and requirements. You will work as part of a larger department that supports creative programming across News and Radio.
You will be part of a team that designs and fabricates solutions as required by programme makers, you will be trained to use the plant machinery in the workshop and the use of hand tools to precise directions, ensuring that health and safety is adhered to at all times. You will often be working alongside staff at all levels and sometimes reacting to pressure of delivery times. You will be expected to work as part of a team and present a professional conduct at all times. The work is very varied and can involve, fabricating metalwork or woodwork to enable a solution within a studio or broadcast space, designing solutions using CAD software and 3D printing. Training will be given to the right person.
Are you the right candidate
We are looking for a person with a professional attitude and conduct to join our Mechanical Technician team, you should have an inquisitive mind and some experience and knowledge of engineering and problem solving. While you may not have formal training, you should be able to demonstrate problem solving, use of hand and power tools and knowledge of how mechanical things work. You should know how to take things apart and have a basic understanding of health and safety within a workshop or similar environment, you should also have IT skills. This role will be required, with training if necessary, to work on broadcast equipment and in pressurised environments, the role will deal with all aspects of mechanical systems and fault diagnosis, which include, Robotic camera systems, wiring, metal fabrication, 3D printing and workshop machinery.
