Material Index is seeking an ambitious full-stack Lead Engineer with an interest in sustainability to join our
growing team at a senior level.
About Us
Material Index is a highly innovative construction technology company focused on enabling material reuse at
scale in the construction industry. Construction is responsible for over half of UK waste, and over a third of our
production of greenhouse gases. Our technology enables the seamless indexing and exchange of materials held
within existing buildings. We reduce carbon, waste, and costs for our clients, and we are enabling a transition to a more circular
economy, where fewer resources are wasted. At scale, we will have a transformational impact and we are looking
to grow.
The Material Index team of 9 consists of engineers, software developers, and architects, working in close proximity in a collaborative and fast-paced studio environment. Our home is in Farringdon, London, and our clients are some of the UK’s largest building contractors and real estate developers. We are a revenue-generating seed-stage business who have recently raised money to expand in this fast-growing sector.
Role
This is a senior role within MI. You will be working closely with our CTO and the other company Directors in a pivotal role for the business. You will be determining, designing, and building out the next digital product iterations, as well as hiring and shaping a great team. In addition to showing great technical results, you'll be strong in communication and project management.
Responsibilities will include:
- Helping guide our roadmap, managing product development cycles from ideation through to maintenance,
- Learning from customers,
- Setting goals,
- Leading technical discussions, and
- Mentoring team members and communicating with the rest of the team.
The current product allows for the rapid surveying and management of components within the built environment and is performing well. We are looking to refine and add significant new features over the next 12 months, allowing us to handle more materials, data, and workflows for larger organisations and networks. This brings a number of complex data challenges and a requirement for us to be strategic in our deployment of technical resources.
Our current team is creative, driven, capable, and has deep industry expertise in construction and engineering.
At a high level, our tech stack is:
- Front End: Next.js, React, MUI, Mapbox (Typescript)
- Back End: GCP, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, tRPC (Typescript, Python)
Experience within seed-stage startups, at leading technology firms, within the built environment or sustainability sector, and/or with marketplaces and surveying software, is all looked upon favourably. We have all had unusual career trajectories, and encourage applicants with similarly varied backgrounds to apply.
Process
- The process will comprise three interviews, one of which will be in person.
- Salary will be dependent on experience and highly competitive.
- There is extensive room for professional growth and Material Index actively encourages and expects all staff to engage in professional discourse.
We welcome people from all backgrounds with the relevant sensibilities and aptitudes. All appointments will be made on merit. Any offer of employment with Material Index will be conditional upon having the right to work in the UK.
Please apply by submitting your CV, a short cover letter, and an optional PDF portfolio of a maximum 15 MB.
