The Mechanical Category Technologist is a unique role which will support technical projects under the leadership of the Category Manager. Rather than a detail design role, this position would be good fit for a Mechanical Engineer looking to be in a higher-level advisory role. The selected candidate will have strong knowledge on emerging technology and technology road maps.
The candidate will apply advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts. The candidate should have experience and understanding with Mechanical design and components such as: chassis assemblies, coldplate assemblies, heatsink assemblies, and their applications. The selected candidate must have the ability to work with a make/buy source board and risk review board to ensure the category management organization considers capabilities and risk mitigation plans to help support our supply chain base and ensure suppliers are successful in program execution. The selected candidate will apply supply chain principles to the category management supply chain base and contributes to the development of new principles and concepts to support the supplier’s technical capabilities and offerings.
The candidate will ensure problem solving work on unusually complex technical problems and provide solutions which are highly innovative and ingenious to support excellent supplier performance. The selected candidate will support the Quarterly Business Reviews by ensuring the technical roadmaps and program needs are clearly summarized for their assigned suppliers. Additionally, the selected candidate will collaborate with the Mechanical Category Strategist to analyze suppliers’ competitive landscape, market trends to influence supplier competition and diverse supply chain base. The selected candidate will interface with design engineering on supplier capabilities, capacity, and design producibility analysis.
The Mechanical Category Technologist will work under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range goals and objectives. The selected candidate’s assignments are often self-initiated and should pursue courses of action necessary to obtain desired results. The selected candidate will work through consultation and agreement with others rather than by formal review of supervisor. This individual will serve as organization spokesperson on advanced projects and/or programs. Acts as advisor to management and internal customers on advanced technical studies and applications.
The selected candidate will understand program execution framework to enable advocacy. The selected candidate will have the ability to provide a technical evaluation of supplier’s capabilities during the business acquisition process (BAP). The selected candidate will be the technical point of contact when responding to NG requests (RFPs, RFI, RFQ.) Additionally, the selected candidate will have the ability to work on competitive captures, program execution, strategy development process, Strategic Gap Analysis, Internal Investment discussions, business growth discussions, strategic studies, cross division business insight and maintain a process on how to look for similar to parts, technology grouping.
Basic Qualification: (T04)
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Manufacturing and/or Materials Engineering with 9+ years of experience OR 7+ years of experience with Master's degree
- The ideal candidate would have experience in the following: Mechanical design background, Vacuum Brazing (VB) process, Additive Manufacturing (AM) process, Design for Manufacturability (DFM) process and experience.
- Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.

- Defense and Military mechanical design experience
- Technical Project Management
- Supplier Interface/Management experience
Salary Range: $109,900 - $173,200
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
