Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to get where they’re going. Since our start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has been focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World’s Most Experienced Driver™—to improve everyone's access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. Our Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, our fully autonomous ride-hailing service, as well as Waymo Via, our trucking and local delivery service. To date, Waymo has driven over 20 million miles autonomously on public roads across 25 U.S. cities and conducted over 20 billion miles of simulation testing.
At Waymo, we are mission-driven and believe deeply in the opportunity of autonomous driving technology to improve mobility and make people's lives better. We are united by purpose and responsibility (for our employees and riders alike). We are looking for kind, committed, employees who have integrity, dream big, work together as one team and create a sense of belonging for one another that is the foundation of our culture. We want each team member to feel welcomed and included in every step of our exciting journey.
The Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) team uses our know-how of CPUs, GPUs, and complex algorithms to process Waymo's sensor data super-fast. We specialize in low-level understanding of compute hardware, and we apply that knowledge wherever we can, throughout the whole stack.
We are looking for a Technical Lead with a background in system performance analysis and optimization to help us improve the complex Perception pipeline that computes hundreds of signals and processes hundreds of MB/s of sensor data in real-time with extremely high reliability and predictability. Your work directly enables a large team of Perception engineers to ship software, and directly influences the architecture of the Perception system. You will report into our Director of Engineering.
In this role, you’ll:
-
Identify performance bottlenecks for the ML workloads onboard and in simulation
-
Propose and implement solutions to optimizing Perception pipeline latency and reliability
-
Develop performance/benchmark/profiling tools to help analyze the performance issues on the car
-
Understand system bottlenecks, pushing for larger changes to the system architecture to improve our performance including how the system is run.
At a minimum, we’d like you to have:
-
B.Sc in Computer Science, EE or a related field
-
Experience in C++
-
Performance analysis and optimization on workloads with 5+ years of experience
-
Experience with multi-core systems and multi-thread interactions
-
Experience with CPU, GPU, or computer system microarchitecture
It’s preferred if you have:
-
Experience with embedded / real-time systems such as robotics, self-driving or graphics/rendering
-
Experience working with ML workloads and frameworks
