About Us:
We're on a mission to make it possible for every person, team, and company to be able to tailor their software to solve any problem and take on any challenge. Computers may be our most powerful tools, but most of us can't build or modify the software we use on them every day. At Notion, we want to change this with focus, design, and craft.
We've been working on this together since 2016, and have customers like Pixar, Mitsubishi, Figma, Plaid, Match Group, and thousands more on this journey with us. Today, we're growing fast and excited for new teammates to join us who are the best at what they do. We're passionate about building a company as diverse and creative as the millions of people Notion reaches worldwide.
Notion is an in person company, and currently requires its employees to come to the office for two Anchor Days (Mondays & Thursdays) and requests that employees spend the majority of their week in the office (including a third day).
About The Role:
Millions of people use Notion, and this number is growing daily. This signifies that a vast user base trusts us to provide a speedy, dependable, and secure experience, something we cherish immensely. Our aim is to continue earning this trust and to constantly surprise our users with the capabilities they can develop within Notion.
The Serving Infra Team's mission is to provide reliable and high-performance backend services to millions of Notion users. Our aim is to develop a scalable architecture that can manage exponential user growth and a wide array of features across various regions. Additionally, we create and maintain common services throughout the company and support each product team in managing their unique services.
What You'll Achieve:
- You'll contribute to scaling Notion as a top-tier service for our millions of users and teams who depend on us daily.
- We’re growing fast with more than 20 million users worldwide.
- You will have the opportunity to build and grow a diverse and inclusive team of engineers working on critical Notion’s architecture and infrastructure.
- You'll create a healthy environment in your team that embodies Notion's values.
- You'll ensure engineers are regularly receiving feedback and that they are making rapid progress on personal and professional goals.
- You'll facilitate planning—the prioritization, sequencing, and staffing of work—for your team.
- You understand the balance between craft, speed, and the bottom line.
- You'll work with others to shape how Notion's engineering organization operates.
- You'll help develop our technical practices, recruiting and onboarding strategy, planning and prioritization process, and more.
- You'll be responsible for maintaining a high quality bar for everything your team supports.
Skills You'll Need to Bring:
- Open mindset: You are receptive to new ideas, concepts, and practices, with a strong interest in continuous learning and development. This involves being open to constructive feedback, being adaptable to changes in the work environment, and persistently seeking growth and development opportunities.
- Startup mentality: You are comfortable navigating the fast moving, unstructured nature of a hyper-growth startup. You are self-motivated to add value and bias towards action. You understand the importance of setting the engineering quality bar for the long term success of our business, but are able to make difficult prioritizations.
- Pragmatic and business-oriented: You care about business impact and prioritize projects accordingly. You don't just go after cool stuff—you understand the balance between craft, speed, and the bottom line. To you, technologies and programming languages are about tradeoffs. You may be opinionated, but you're not ideological and can learn new technologies as you go.
- Technical background: You've experienced the challenges of scaling and re-architecting infrastructure through orders of magnitude of growth. You have a sufficiently deep background in infrastructure and technology that you can ask the right questions of your team, balance technology and people concerns, and make hard tradeoffs.
- Management experience: You have lead or managed infrastructure-focused engineering teams, particularly ones that own a wide swath of hosted infrastructure (like AWS) and work closely with product teams. You have managed senior engineering teams and have experience in scaling teams.
Nice to Haves:
- You have lead or managed engineering teams at startups before, particularly during periods of rapid growth and organizational change.
- You have experience cultivating engineering practices and processes—e.g., code review, incident management, continuous deployment—where they didn't exist or scale before.
- You've heard of computing pioneers like Ada Lovelace, Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and others—and understand why we're big fans of their work.
Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Notion.
